Cubase - Behind the Manual

Multi-Channel Recording Back to Behind the Manual

There are a couple of reasons why you might want to multi-channel record: you might want to record multiple people simultaneously, even possibly live, or you might want to use a controller than can output multiple MIDI Channels.

For ‘multi person’ Multi-Channel recording you will need a sound card with more than 2 physical inputs. For instance an Audiolink 96 Multiset which has 8 analog inputs and outputs. The number of channels you can multi-record with, is based on the number of physical inputs your ASIO diver supports.

1. Connect audio cables from all your sound sources to all the Inputs you want to use on your sound card.

2. From the Devices menu, select VST Connections.

3. Create an Input for every Channel you want to record into, making sure each is set to a different Input on your sound card (in this example we are using an mLAN audio device).

4. From the Project menu, select Add Track>Multiple...

... and then choose the correct number of tracks.

5. Set each track to a different Input you defined in the VST Connections menu. This can be done in either the Inspector or the Mixer.

6. Set each track to monitor incoming audio by clicking on the Monitor icon for each track.

7. Play your sound sources (microphones, guitars, synths, etc) and verify meter activity. You should now see and hear sound playing in and out of your system.

8. Record Enable all the tracks, set the left locator where you want recording to begin and press record on the transport bar.

Sing into your Mic, play your guitar, etc and then press stop when you are done.

You should now be able to see and hear your recorded tracks. If you see the waveforms but can't hear them play, make sure the tracks are not still set to monitor.
