Drum'n'bass is sort of unique in that usually one person writes and produces. In the rock world, the writers, performers and producers are often different people, in d&b it's more common for one person to do all the jobs. Since a big part of d&b is the sounds you use, producing isn't like a layer on top of the basic songwriting like it is in pop/rock, it's an integral part of what makes the tunes what they are. So, I'll be using the term "producing" to cover (song)writing, performing, producing, mastering: the whole process from head to CD.
